security risks
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to severe restrictions on air travel into and out of the country. Western sanctions are precipitating pressure on the Russian economy, with the ruble losing up to 20% of its value in late February. The government has responded aggressively against anti-war protests; travelers should avoid any demonstrations.
Islamist terrorist groups operating in Russia have demonstrated capabilities to attack outside the North Caucasus region. Most attacks still take place in the North Caucasus region, especially Dagestan, but suicide attacks have also taken place on St. Petersburg's metro, at Moscow's Domodedovo airport, on Moscow's metro, and on a Volgograd trolleybus and train station.
